Tales of King Arthur
by
Higham, N. J
2005
This seminal new study explores how and why historians and writers from the Middle Ages to the present day have constructed different accounts of this well-loved figure.
N. J Higham offers an in-depth examintaion of the first two Arthurian texts: the History of the Britons and the Welsh Annals. He argues that historians have often been more influenced by what the idea of Arthur means in their present context than by such primary sources
King Arthur: Myth-making and History illuminates and discusses some central points of debate:
* What role was Arthur intended to perform in the political and cultural worlds that constructed him? * How did the idea of King Arthur evolve? * What did the myth of Arthur mean to both authors and their audiences?
King Arthur: Myth-making and History is fascinating reading for anyone interested in the origins and evolution of the Arthurian legend.

Small ads love story played out on television
IT BEGAN with the words: I SawYou. When James Barbour, an Edinburgh University student with an essay crisis, walked into a student bookstore, he was dazzled by Carolyn Leslie, the girl behind the counter. But, unable to summon the courage to ask her for a date, he relied on a peculiarly Scottish phenomenon to woo the woman who had stolen his heart: the I Saw You column in the List magazine. Mr Barbour placed an advert in the section, where lovelorn but starstruck people send a declaration of love to someone they may have only glimpsed. He hoped for a reply, but did not expect one: four years on, the pair are happily married. Umbrella Productions, the Scottish production company, is working on a version of I Saw You, set in and around Glasgow, to be broadcast on Scottish Television in August. Granada Television will screen a drama under the same title starring actress Fay Ripley next Monday. The productions are a testament to the phenomenon brought to the UK by the listings magazine the List in 1992.
